Safety, moderation and takedown

Programmes carry photographs, video, tributes and messages from many people. This page explains how we keep that content safe, and how anyone can report something that should not be there.

Last updated 21 October 2026.

Uploads and how they are handled

A host can upload photographs and video, up to a generous size per file, so that a programme can carry a family's memories. We accept only known image and video types, we reject files whose content does not match their type, and we scan uploads for known malware before they are stored. Media is served from a separate media host, not from the same place as the site, so that a problem with a file cannot affect the site itself. We strip location metadata from photographs where we can, so that a picture of a home does not reveal where that home is.

Guest content

Tributes, RSVPs and guestbook messages can be set by a host to appear immediately or to wait for approval. We recommend approval for any programme that will be widely shared. A host can hide or delete any guest entry at any time, and can block a repeat offender. We keep a short record of moderation actions so that we can act on a pattern of abuse.

What is not allowed

Content that is unlawful, hateful, harassing, defamatory, sexually explicit, or that infringes someone else's copyright or privacy is not allowed. Neither is content that impersonates another person or organisation, or that is used to defraud people who are grieving. We remove content that breaks these rules and, where it is serious or repeated, we suspend the account behind it.

How to report something

If you see content that should not be there, email [email protected] with the link to the programme and, if you can, a short description and a screenshot. If you are the host, you can hide or delete the content yourself straight away. We aim to acknowledge a report within one business day and to act on clear cases of abuse within twenty-four hours. For urgent matters involving a threat to someone's safety, contact the South African Police Service first and then tell us.

Takedown and copyright

If you believe content infringes your copyright, send us the link, a description of the work, and a statement that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner. If you believe content invades your privacy or is defamatory, send us the link and an explanation. We will remove or restrict clearly infringing content while we look into it, and we will tell the host so that they can respond. We keep a record of each takedown request and its outcome.

Fraud and impersonation

Criminals sometimes copy a funeral or wedding programme and change the bank details to steal contributions. We watch for duplicate programmes and for bank details that change suddenly, and we warn guests to confirm account details with the family through a channel they trust. If you think a programme is a fake, report it to us immediately and do not pay.
